In the year of 1854, I was
born in the new Territory of Kansas. My Pa owned the biggest spread in the
territory. By the time I was 12, I knew more about running a ranch than most
men. You see, my Pa not only educated me with books, but with life. When I was
15, my life took a big turn, my Pa & Ma both died from the fever.
This led to me bein’ thrown off my land by Banker Johnson and his men
from Wichita. Banker Johnson paid me
such a small amount that he almost stole my ranch from me.
They told me a woman could not own land and they had the law to back them
up. But I wern’t thru with Banker
Johnson and his men. There were several of us womenfolk who had been abused by
them menfolk and we decided it was time to turn the tables on them.
A group of us womenfolk got together
and worked out a plan to stop the men. We became the “Bad Girls”.
My name was Charity, because I helped stop the abuse and steal’n and
gave back to them who needed help. When
we had it out with the men, we each had our own words for them.
My words were: “Abe Lincoln may have freed all men, but Sam Colt made
us women equal”.
In real life, I was born in Wichita,
KS. I met my husband, Alan, when he
was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base. We
moved to several places during his career in the Air Force.
When he retired we settled in Belton, MO.
We saw a group of reenactors
at the Austin Bean Eatin’. We felt
these were people who enjoyed portraying some of the visions of the Old West.
We joined the group that summer. When
that group dissolved, some of the members who wanted to teach gun safety
education and have fun began a new group called The Osage Valley Vigilantes.
We joined up with them in the fall of that year.
We are all volunteers. We
have a few retired members, but most
of our members still work and our young people go to school.
We practice our lines in our scripts so we can correctly portray
different characters in different skits. Some
of our skits are comedy, some are drama and some have a good combination of
everything in them. Our main focus
is to teach gun safety education, some history and have good family fun.
Hope you will come see our
shows, learn more about us, come to our meetings on Thursday evenings and maybe
you will enjoy becoming a part of our Osage Valley Vigilante family.
